ScreeningCarte Blanche to Florence MIAILHE, guest artist of the e.magiciens 2008 |
Born in France in 1956, Florence Miailhe graduated from the Higher National School of Decorative Art, where she majored in engraving. She worked first of all as a layout artist and illustrator for magazines while also working as a painter. She is passionate about animated cinema, and decided to move her painting career to the next level by making her first film, Hammam, in 1991.
She uses a technique of live animation in front of the camera, so that each shot features a single sheet which she paints with pastels, one frame at a time. It is a technique which allows her to retain the riches of her pictorial material as it shows a painting unfolding over time. These films, made in dry pastel (Hammam, Shéhérazade, Au premier dimanche d’août) or in oil and sand (Les oiseaux blancs et les oiseaux noirs, Conte de quartier, Matière à rêver) are distributed to a range of festivals and have earned her international acclaim.
Au premier dimanche d’août won, among other awards, the César French film award for Best short film 2002 and her last film, Conte de quartier, received a special award at Cannes in 2006.
Working with animation students at the Gobelins school of visual communication, at La Poudrière and at the National School of Decorative Arts, Florence Miailhe loves to meet the public to promote pictorial animation and demonstrate her working techniques.
